The Japan Foundation Awards are presented every year to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to international mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and other countries through academic, artistic and other cultural pursuits. One of the award recipients of this year is Sibiu International Theatre Festival founded in Sibiu, Romania in 1994. The festival, the third largest performing arts festival in Europe after Avignon and Edinburgh, has continuously invited prominent actors of Japanese traditional theater such as Kanzaburo XVIII (a Kabuki actor) and Mansai Nomura (a Noh actor). On October 23, 2015, H.E. Dr. Khalil Hassan, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to Japan, attended a commemorative lecture titled “Cultural Diplomacy” by Mr. Constantin Chiriac who is the founder and the director of Sibiu International Theatre Festival. As an actor, he also performed the Radu Stanca National Theatre production of Oedipus before his lecture.
